The Haiti earthquake is a natural disaster without equal. An estimated 200,000 people have been killed, tens of thousands injured and the United Nations has estimated the repair billed will be more than US$10 billion.
As each day unfolds, we have more and more information about our beneficiaries and staff. Please note that as we receive confirmed information on specific children, babies and Leadership students, sponsors will be contacted personally. We understand that: - 193 children, parents, siblings, staff and church partners have tragically passed away
- 702 children and family have been injured
- 5,970 homes and churches have been damaged or destroyed
- 30 Compassion child development centres have been affected
Emergency relief Our team of 12 specialists and health professionals from the US have been in Port-au-Prince treating primarily crush injuries to deep lacerations requiring amputations. They worked under tarps in car parks and at regional centres at or close to our child development centres. The first airlifted supplies continue to be distributed. Packs provide emergency food and supplies for each family for a fortnight. Each family will receive a pack and a second one a fortnight later to ensure their basic needs are met for at least a month. Please pray Please pray for the people of Haiti, for: - Comfort and strength for those grieving the loss of loved ones, including staff, partners and sponsored children and their families
- Protection from disease, infection, violence and further trauma
- Protection, wisdom and strength for our emergency response team now and as the disaster unfolds, including favour, protection and efficiency as they distribute the family care packs
- Peace in the nation of Haiti
- Wisdom and integrity for the Government of Haiti
- A spirit of unity and co-operation among governments and aid agencies coordinating relief
- That sponsors and donors from around the world will be generous in their giving and faithful in the prayers
- Protection for unaccompanied children left traumatized and vulnerable as a result of the earthquake
