Bolivia
Some 800,000 children under the age of 18 are working as labourers in Bolivia, in situations that can involve mining, sugar cane harvesting or sexual exploitation.
Compassion International began working in Bolivia in 1975. Over 47,000 children participate in around 188 child development centres and Compassion Australia assists over 2900 of these children. Currently there are around 113 Bolivian students enrolled in the Leadership Development Program and eight Child Survival Programs in operation. Our goal is to reach out to Bolivian children; helping provide them the opportunity to rise above their circumstances and become all God has created them to be.
Project: BO-431, El Getsemani Student Centre
Location: Nueva Tilata, 18 km southeast of La Paz, Bolivia
Your sponsored child lives on the plains of Nueva Tilata, home to approximately 6,000 residents. Typical houses are constructed of cement floors, mud walls and corrugated iron roofs. The regional diet consists of maize, bananas, bread, beef, plantains, rice, potatoes and eggs.
Common health problems in this area include diarrhoea, malnutrition, flu, skin diseases and dental cavities. Most adults in Nueva Tilata work as street vendors and earn the equivalent of $US100 per month. This community needs employment opportunities, food, improved housing and affordable education.
Your sponsorship allows the staff of El Getsemani Student Centre to provide your sponsored child with Bible teaching, supplementary food, hygiene education, games and academic support. The centre staff will also provide social activities and parenting workshops for the parents or guardians of your sponsored child.
