Heart surgery for Alice

Who: Alice, a 13-year-old girl registered with Compassion in Rwanda

Where: Alice will travel from her home in Central Butare, Rwanda, to MIOT hospital in Chennai, India, for the surgery.

What: Provide heart surgery and follow up medical care for Alice, who has been diagnosed with an Atrial Septal Defect, a congenital heart condition. Since Rwanda has no cardiology facilities capable of correcting her condition, Alice will travel to Chennai, India, to undergo heart surgery.

Your support will cover all of Alice’s medical treatment, including relevant tests and scans, her time in hospital, surgeon’s fees, outpatient care, passports, transportation and accommodation costs for her mother and a local Compassion staff member, who will travel from Butare to Chennai with Alice to ensure her safety and wellbeing.

Cost: $18,000

Alice lives with her mother and brother in the community of Taba, in central Butare, Rwanda. For five years, she has attended the Restoration Church of Taba Child Development Centre and has made good progress in her classes at the local primary school. She loves skipping and playing with her friends.

Recently, at a routine health check, a local doctor detected a murmur in Alice’s heartbeat and referred her to a cardiologist. Further testing revealed that Alice has a large Atrial Septal Defect (ASD)—a gap of 12mm between her left and right atria. This gap is causing Alice to suffer from blood pressure problems and is damaging the right side of her heart.

The cardiologist recommended that Alice undergo surgery to correct the problem, but there is no specialist hospital in the country that can perform the surgery.

In desperation, Compassion Rwanda contacted Compassion India staff, and were able to book a bed for her at the Madras Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (MIOT) Hospital in Chennai. The MIOT Hospital is well known as a leading authority in this area.

With your help, Alice will travel from Butare to Chennai and undergo life-changing surgery. Once again, she will be restored to good health, able to play with her friends and go back to school.

Your support will cover all of Alice’s travel costs and medical treatment, including relevant tests and scans, her time in hospital, surgeon’s fees, outpatient care,  as wells as passports, transportation and accommodation costs for her mother and a local Compassion staff member, who will travel from Butare to Chennai with Alice to ensure her safety and wellbeing.
