Through Compassion’s Leadership Development Program, students like Abbel Joseph are able to aim for a life beyond the slums into which they were born.
Abbel’s family left their home in the poor region of Solino in Haiti. They now live in a very quiet area where the main road is near the house. In Solino, they had to walk 15 minutes to reach the main road. Abbel can still recall the tough times his family endured and recognises that many who live in Solino face a hard life. He would like to be an example of success, encouraging other children and young people from poor communities to never give up. Every Saturday, Abbel teaches English to children at the local Compassion centre. He also assists as an interpreter for overseas visitors.
A graduate in Business Management, Abbel now works as a radio communications specialist for the UN in Haiti.
