Completing Compassion's core programs

Because Compassion believes that poverty is best addressed through the transformation of the individual child, Compassion does not engage in community development as a stand alone program, and neither does Compassion fund community development activities through the money received from the one-to-one Child Sponsorship Program.

However, to ensure that children receive the best possible opportunity to break the cycle of poverty, Compassion seeks to address all the obstacles that can hinder and impede the healthy development of children and their opportunity to reach their full potential. Many of these barriers stem from such factors as the inadequate sanitation, natural disasters, widespread health epidemics and/or issues that directly affect an individual child's family and home life, such as a parent's inability to generate income.

Compassion's Complementary Interventions tackle some of these additional concerns and provide solutions which enhance, improve and complement our core programs - the Child Survival Program, the Child Sponsorship Program and the Leadership Development Program.

These interventions can include:

  • Clean water (wells and water purification systems), toilets and hygiene
  • Disaster relief following a natural disaster such as an earthquake or flood
  • Education and training programs for parents of sponsored children
  • Emergency medical care and/or surgery
  • Extra nutritional support
  • Extra support for orphans and highly vulnerable children
  • HIV and AIDS initiatives-includes education, prevention and treatment
  • Income generation for parents
  • Infrastructure such as improvement to child development centres
  • Immunisations and malaria prevention activities
  • Support for registered children not yet sponsored
  • Vocational training and non-formal education
