From the outside, Alvin’s Christmas doesn’t look very merry. His father is sick with tuberculosis and doesn’t have a steady job. His mother works long hours washing other people’s clothes to try to support the family of five. His older brother is deaf and mute and totally dependent on their parents. The family lives in a small and dark shack in the outskirts of the Philippines capital, Manila. As their neighbours celebrate the traditional Noche Buena feast on Christmas Eve with roasted pig, fried rice and local delicacies, Alvin and his family usually share a plate of dry noodles.

The first time Noppadol and Ladda Surin attended a Sunday service at Mai-treejit Sawang-dandin Church, there were only five members in the congregation. The new, young pastors had just graduated from Bible School and gone to serve God in northeastern Thailand. As they walked away from the church grounds after the service, they looked out at the large Buddhist temples that formed a formidable fence around the community—and their small church.
