Why is Compassion Australia not listed with the Australian Council for International Development?

Updated Thursday 04 June, 2015

Compassion Australia is not a member of the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) because of the church-based nature of our child development programs.

We are a Christian organisation that partners with Christian churches to implement child development programs in developing countries and communities. We believe it's important to work in partnership with local churches to meet all the needs of children living in poverty, including spiritual needs, as part of a holistic child development model.

However, it's important to note that while Compassion is a Christian organisation, we believe that we are called to serve the poor, regardless of ethnicity, gender or religious background or belief. As such, children are registered with Compassion's programs based on need, not religious belief. Ongoing participation in the program doesn't depend on becoming a Christian.
