Does Compassion rescue children from child labour and trafficking?
While Compassion is not a trafficking prevention organisation, our holistic child development model does reduce the risk of registered children being trafficked. Our role is one of prevention and protection. Our programs provide children with positive and safe environments where they can learn and play among their peers and loving adults who care for them with dignity, respect and integrity. Critical to this is the local church’s close monitoring of child attendance, home visits and training in recognising abuse of all forms. These relationships play a vital role in bringing every child a measure of safety and security as well as the prospect of counselling, recourse to justice and other means of restoration if a child is affected by violence.
Compassion employees and project workers are required to sign and abide by a Compassion-specific, internationally accepted statement of commitment to child protection and child abuse prevention. Compassion employees and project workers receive training on child protection. Children are educated on their rights as well as receive help and advice when they experience or witness abuse. Character references are conducted on every project worker who may come in to contact with children through our program. Every Compassion assisted project is required to implement a local plan of action for child protection and we regularly monitor implemented policies to ensure that expectations are fulfilled.
