My Story: Jennifer Gitiri

My journey with my sponsor started when I was seven years old in the Korogocho slum in Kenya. They told that they went to a Compassion concert. They saw a picture of a beautiful girl and they felt God leading them to sponsor me. It was also a season where they had lost their daughter through a road accident and they wanted to make a difference in the life of a child.

They started writing letters to me immediately after they sponsored me. I still remembered the first letter they sent me telling me they have decided to be my sponsors. I was elated and overjoyed and I remember sharing it with the kids at the Compassion project and at home.

We connected through letters and pictures. They were very diligent in writing and I would receive a letter every time letters were handed out at the [Compassion] project. When my mother passed on when I was 14 years old, they became my parents and they would encourage me through the grieving. They also encouraged me to be the best that I can. Whenever they would receive my report card from school, they would congratulate me and encourage me to do better in school. The most important part was that they would tell me that they are praying for me every day and that they loved me as their sponsored child.

My relationship with my sponsors encouraged me to succeed in life because they had so much hope in me. They actually believed in me more than I believed in myself. They were keen on my progress at school and my career goals and impressed on me to pursue what I believed in.

Were it not for God working in my life through Compassion, I would not have been where I am today. Through Compassion, I was able to get an education because I had no one to pay for my schooling. It was also through Compassion that I got to know about Jesus and I made a personal decision to be born again. That is the greatest gift I received from Compassion because Jesus Christ became my all. I have walked through this journey of faith and I thank God for Compassion which introduced me to the saving grace of Jesus Christ.
